2010 Honey Show

A Honey Show will be held on the Saturday of the conference. Entry is open to all beekeepers who are members of the nine beekeeping associations in the MSWCC group. There is a cup for the association whose beekeepers win the most first prizes.
Please read the schedule and rules carefully, since however good your exhibits they cannot win if they do not comply with the stated requirements. There are no fees for entry.
SCHEDULE OF CLASSES
- Two jars of light honey
- Two jars of medium honey
- Two jars of dark honey
- Two jars of soft set honey
- One shallow comb suitable for extraction
- Two cut comb, approximately 227g (8oz) each
- One bottle of dry mead
- One bottle of sweet mead
- One cake of beeswax, unpatterned, approximately 227g (8oz)
- One bottle of Honey Beer to meet the following criteria:
- Beers should be exhibited in plain, unmarked, brown glass, 500ml, capped beer bottles.
- Beer bottles should be filled so that the air space is between ½” and ¾” below the cap.
- Three beekeeping related photographs:
- Prints must be 6" x 4" or larger, mounted on an A5 mounting board with a margin of at least 1" on all sides.
- Prints may be black & white or coloured.
- One jar of honey preserve or marmalade. List of contents to be provided on a card (max 150mm x 150mm).
- One honey cake to the following recipe:
- Ingredients
- 140g (5oz) butter
- 115g (4oz) soft brown sugar
- 170g (6oz) clear honey
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon water
- 200g (7oz) self raising flour
- Place butter, sugar, honey and water in a saucepan and heat until the butter has melted, stirring all the time. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the contents to cool to about blood temperature. Gradually beat in the eggs. Add sieved flour and mix until smooth (but do not over-mix). Pour the mixture into a greased and lined 7" cake tin and bake for 1 hour or until risen and firm to the touch. Oven temperature: 180ºC/350ºF/gas mark 4.
RULES
- Entry labels will be provided on the day of the conference and should be positioned as follows:
- Jars of honey and preserve (classes 1-4 and 12): approximately 12mm (½") from the bottom of the jar
- Comb for extracting (class 5): one label on the top right hand corner of the glass and a second on the top bar of the frame itself
- Cut comb (class 6): approximately 12mm (½") from the bottom of the container
- Mead (classes 7,8): approximately 12mm (½") from the bottom of the bottle
- Beeswax and honey cakes (classes 9, 13): on the container or plate.
- Honey in classes 1-4 must be in plain 454g (1lb) squat glass jars with lacquered lids.
- A comb for extraction must be in a bee proof case and removable for judging.
- Cut comb must be shown in standard white 227g (8oz) containers.
- Mead must be shown in 70-75cl clear punted glass bottles with white flanged removable stoppers.
- First, second and third prize certificates will be awarded in each class where the exhibits merit them. The association whose members have the most first prizes will hold the Inter Counties Cup for one year. In the event of a tie, the second and third prizes will be taken into account, but only when they are not from the same association as the first prize.
- Any number of members from a given association may enter each class, but no one person may have more than one entry in each class.
- The honey show is open only to members of beekeeping associations which are part of the Midland & South Western Counties Convention, viz Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Gwent, Herefordshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Northamptonshire, South Staffordshire, Swansea & District and Worcestershire.
- The decision of the judge is final.
